If you haven’t already done so, this is just a reminder that picking our Secret Santa names is underway.
If you already confirmed “yes” to participating, your name is in the Secret Santa bucket. If you haven’t said yes, and would still like to participate, please let a full timer know. They will make up a slip of paper with your name to be added to the bucket, and put your name of the list of participants.
When you pick a name from the bucket to find out who you will be buying a gift for, please KEEP the slip of paper. Do NOT put it back in the bucket.
Make a check mark next to your name on the sheet near the bucket to indicate you picked a name. (Check off YOUR name, not the name of the person you picked.)
Remember, the price point is a minimum of $15.00. Please make sure the gift is in the library BEFORE the day of the party, which is Wednesday, December 19th. (Drop off your gift with enough time so that the person you bought for will be able to open it on Wednesday 12/19/18, potentially at 9:30am.)
Any questions, just ask!

Hello everyone, This is a compilation of general info/quirky things to know for the Winter Registration. It is long, but it is full of good information. Thank you in advance for reading it. If there are any questions, please ask!
General Info
Hauppauge cardholders may register beginning Saturday, December 1 at 9:30am.
Out-of-district cardholders will be placed on a waitlist starting Monday, December 3 and invited to classes based on availability. On Monday (and after) refer to the out-of-district waitlist document for out-of-district registration instructions (you’ll either add OOD guests to a list or register guests directly in Sierra based on what it says).
Note about the layout of out-of-district waitlists: For the Fall, we had experimented by arranging the waitlists to mirror the new subject-based layout in our newsletter. Based on feedback, we are going back to the old way of doing out of district waitlists with a slight modification. There are now only three waitlist documents: Adult, Teen, and Children’s. Each document contains the waitlists for that whole age demographic. Although this makes things less complicated, the documents are now very large. Please take note of the following things:
– When you have a word document open, you are the only one that can type in it at that moment. When you are finished using that document, PLEASE make sure to save and exit so that someone else may access it. If someone has not done that, the next person will see a “read-only” version. – The waitlist documents are arranged in the same order as the newsletter and the registration sheets. Because each document contains multiple pages, it is helpful to use the “find” feature located in the top right hand corner of your screen in the tool bar. You can click on “find” (or use the keyboard shortcut CONTROL F) to open up the navigation side bar. Here you can put a program name, a keyword(s), or just the code to take you to the exact program waitlist you want. *If anyone needs a refresher on this trick, let us know. – Starting Monday, the waitlist document shortcuts will be on each of the service desk computer desktops.
Reading Clubs
Adult and Teen Winter Reading Clubs Sign up and computer logging begins December 1. Guests may register themselves online by following the link on our website or you may register them through the reading program website (see SRC Admin bookmark on the Reference computers – the password is librarian). Please give guests their registration goodie bag (which includes a raffle ticket) when they register. If you are unfamiliar with the reading club website, please ask a full timer for a tutorial. *If you’re registering them you can make the user name their first and last name (no caps/no spaces) and their password (which can be changed by them later) can be 9791600.
For Adults: Collect submitted raffle tickets in the Adult Winter Reading Club binder. Raffle tickets, reading logs, instructions, and the ticket binder are all at the Guest Services Desk. . (One ticket per book review.)
For Teens: Raffle tickets can be put into the raffle boxes at the Children’s Reference Desk as they are earned. (One ticket per book review.)
Children’s Winter Reading Club Sign up in Sierra (using the code HPM3077) and distribution of paper log entries begins December 1. (The Children’s club is not on the reading club software, but is in Sierra.) The first fifty children to sign up will receive a certificate that entitles them to one free ticket to a Children’s Theater Production, with the purchase of an adult ticket, at the Noel S. Ruiz Theatre in Oakdale. Please write the child’s name on the certificate before giving it to them. This will be at the Children’s desk next to the goodie bags.
Adult Classes and Events
Trivia Night There was a typo on the adult registration sheet. The code is listed as HPA0135 when it is really HPA0193. We made the correction to all the sheets that were printed, but if anyone got a registration sheet early they may have ones with the mistaken code. It is correct in Sierra and the Newsletter.
AARP Tax-Aide (Free Tax Prep) Remind guests to pick up an intake form prior to their appointment or arrive 20 minutes before their appointment to fill it out. Intake forms are at the Guest Services Desk.
Explore New Technologies (Google Expeditions, Augmented Reality and Robotics Demo) Teens and adults welcome. Registration not required. Guests may drop in anytime from 10am-12pm or 2pm-4pm.
Hauppauge Chamber of Commerce Interest Meeting Open to all. Registration not required.
3D Snowflake Craft Drop In Open to all. Registration not required.
Children’s
Shake N Make Music (on Monday, December 3rd) and Dog Tales (on December 6th) were from the Fall Newsletter, but also appear in this Winter Newsletter since they occur after the Winter Program registration date. Please be aware that this is why there are already people on those two program lists (and waitlists). Add any new names to the list. The waitlists for these two programs will be found in the Fall waitlists folder.
Rotary Reads didn’t make it into our newsletter in the classes and events section, but it is in the calendar section of the newsletter. It is also on the registration sheet and in Sierra.
Winter Reading Club Ice Cream Party is listed in the newsletter in two different places- one has the correct code HPM3063 and one has a typo HMP3063. It is correct in Sierra and the registration sheet.
Arctic Habitats has a code typo in our newsletter. The newsletter lists it as HPJ1398, but it is really HPJ1407. The code is correct in Sierra and our registration sheet.
Teens
SAT Prep class- this requires a check for $100 made payable to Tom Kenney (the instructor). Guests may sign up for this class without a check (if they wish to give it at a later date or even the night of the first class) but giving a check secures their spot. He has a max of 20 students, which we never reach so this is why we can afford to be lenient with collecting the checks at the time of registration. Please remind students to bring to class a copy of the Official SAT Study Guide from the College Board- copyright 2018.
Toy Paramedic Volunteers- This volunteer opportunity is an application in addition to a Sierra record. The application is behind the Children’s reference desk. (The dates available are from December 8- February 23) They can fill out the application and choose up to 5 dates. Once they hand it back to you, PLEASE enter them into Sierra (regardless of home library). Then initial and date the application and put it in the pink folder next to the stack of blank applications.

Message from Hauppauge Public Library
WhenToWork.com message from Christa Zaros at Hauppauge Public Library forwarded at your request.
Hi Everyone,
Starting today, we will be checking out key fobs to guests with room reservations at the guest services desk.
The key fobs are locked in the pink plastic key box and are labeled by room name.
Guests should provide a library card to check out the fobs. If a guest does not have a library card, you may make an exception and ask for another form of ID – in this case, check out the fob with the guest card and encourage the guest to apply for a card at their home library. If the guest lives in the Hauppauge library district, ask them to apply for a Hauppauge library card and use their new card to check out the fob.
IMPORTANT: Please verify the room reservation in Spaces BEFORE checking out a key fob and remind guests to return the fob when they are finished using the room. There is a $5 replacement fee for lost fobs.
Any questions, please ask a full timer.
Christa
